September Outings
The larch trees were simply amazing.
Oddly reminiscent of Kebler Pass or somewhere else in Colorado, except these look like pine trees.
It feels really good to breathe fresh air outside of that darn city!
We had a perfect lazy afternoon hike, and found ourselves sitting down, and taking many funny and eccentric self portraits.
Hello Mr. Camel. Apparently he's the lone mascot of this ger camp...haven't seen him since we first went on a hike here in early May. Sometimes he hangs with the cows, sometimes he tries to sneak into the gers.
It smells good in there, what's for dinner? As the guy on the right emerged from the ger, he was a little too close for the camel's comfort, and was quickly sneeze-grunted upon.
So since Miranda's time here is quickly running out (she leaves October 27th, headed back home), we decided we better start doing more touristy things...so we went to check out a Tibetan Buddhist Monastery. It was fascinating to see the ornate architecture and tediously hand-crafted sculptures of these early 19th century set of buildings.
Inside the monastery.
A lot of these sculptures were created from paper machete.
Not sure I'd want to meet this thing.
Freaky fornicators.
Looks kind of like the Cheshire cat from Alice in Wonderland.
The next part of the monastery had a general theme to it: HELL.
Pretty graphic...doesn't look like a very nice place to be.
Now we're in cold hell. I don't know, I think I'd rather freeze to death than be picked apart by crows, insects, and wolf-goat-bison beasts.
As a westerner, I always pictured Buddhist monasteries and Buddhists in general to be very peaceful, it is really sort of shocking to see these gruesome images. Very entertaining.
WOW. Pretty sick...
Anyhow, last weekend we went to a Mongolian song-dance-contortionist performance. All performers were incredibly talented and true professionals. The contortionist pretty much blew our minds. Some of the things she did made Miranda and I want to puke.
Just getting warmed up....
Pretty flexible...
I wonder what Brenda Flemming (yoga teacher) would have to say about this young woman.
Amazing.
The beginning of a very odd shaman dance
All of the performers bowing
Yours truly...we sure miss everybody!
Snippet from one of the performances.
This video is so disharmonious its almost annoying/painful to watch, but you should just to see how odd/disturbing it is.
More to come.....
